I’ve always believed that life is meant to be celebrated; there’s no reason to wait for milestones like turning 40, but anytime your soul says “go.” That’s why as my 35th birthday approached, I decided I wanted to go big.

And I did.

While searching for inspiration online (which even as travel advisors, we do), I stumbled across an incredible Mediterranean cruise deal. The airfare ended up costing nearly as much as the cruise itself, but I didn’t hesitate. My philosophy has always been that tomorrow is never promised, so I booked it. Then I called my best friend, who’s always up for an adventure, and together we set sail for one of the best trips of my life.

A Stop in Spain: Barcelona Before Boarding

We kicked our trip off with two unforgettable nights in Barcelona, soaking in the culture, architecture, and gastronomy. Tapas, cava, and late-night laughter filled our days. I can’t recommend Barcelona enough; it’s one of those cities that feels alive in every sense.

If you haven’t been, add Spain to your travel list. The food alone is reason enough to make the trip. Click here to check out more of my favorite spots and recommendations in Spain.

Lavender Dreams in Provence

Our first port was Marseille, France, and our trip aligned perfectly with lavender season in Provence! The Valensole lavender fields in Provence are over an hour drive from the cruise port, but it was an excursion that was well-worth it. Despite roadblocks (the French president was in town), we took a private day trip there, stopped for a leisurely lunch in Aix-en-Provence, and ended the day visiting Basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde overlooking the city.

As a travel advisor, I now know this was a bold move, as venturing that far on your own shore excursion isn’t ideal, but it turned out to be one of the most memorable days of my life. I would also highly recommend booking a private tour of the lavender fields for the best experience and photo opportunities. Get in touch to hear more about our experience and for tour information.

The Allure of the Côte d’Azur

Our next stop was Cannes, gateway to the French Riviera. We joined a cruise excursion visiting Nice, Èze, and Monaco, the perfect postcard of the Mediterranean coast. I wasn’t feeling my best that day (travel isn’t always glamorous!), but the charm of the Côte d’Azur lifted my spirits instantly.

If I were to do it again, I’d skip the big bus tour and opt for a private or small-group experience. The South of France deserves to be savored slowly, with time to sip rosé by the sea and linger over a long lunch in Monaco (which we did, and it was unforgettable). Discover more of my personal picks in France if you’re considering a trip of your own.

Scooters and Sunshine in Mallorca

A scenic scooter ride through Mallorca offers stunning views.

Our third port was Palma de Mallorca, where we stayed overnight. We rented 200cc scooters (technically motorcycles, so yes, a motorcycle endorsement is required!) and spent the day exploring.

From Platja des Trenc to hidden backroads and beach cafés, Mallorca surprised me with its laid-back vibe and beautiful scenery. We capped the night with cocktails and music in town, a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Sunset Magic in Ibiza

Whether you’re lounging poolside or exploring the cobblestone streets, Ibiza at sunset is a sight to behold

Our final stop: Ibiza. Beyond its famous party scene, this island has deep roots for me; my great-grandfather was born here. We explored Dalt Vila, the old town with cobblestone streets and a stunning cathedral overlooking the sea.

As the sun set outside the cathedral walls, it felt like everything – family history, adventure, gratitude – came full circle. We lingered over brunch the next morning, soaking in the slower side of Ibiza before sailing back to Barcelona.

Reflections from the Sea

The cruise itself exceeded expectations; it was elegant, clean, and seamless every time we embarked or disembarked. Like any cruise, it had its pros and cons, but the memories far outweighed the imperfections.

If you’ve ever dreamed of waking up to a new country each morning without unpacking, a Mediterranean cruise might just be your perfect luxury getaway. And if you’d like help planning your own celebration at sea, I’d love to help you make it happen.

Cruising can be exquisitely refined: quiet mornings at sea, curated days ashore, and service that anticipates what you want before you ask. Use this guide to compare the four primary cruise styles with a luxury lens, then choose the experience that fits how you like to travel.

quick myth check

If you’ve never experienced a cruise (or have never experienced the right cruise), you might have heard some of these common myths. Sound familiar?

Myth: “River cruises are only for retirees.”
Truth: They’re for culture lovers of any age who like easy access to cities.

Myth: “Expedition = roughing it.”
Truth: Many ships offer luxury experiences! Think fine dining, spa time, and expert guides… with penguins on the side.

Myth: “Cruises are too structured.”
Truth: Today’s ships are flexible: do-it-all or do-very-little.

Now that we’ve covered our bases, let’s explore the main types of cruises.

Luxury Ocean Cruises

Greece Cruise
Island hop in Greece on a luxury ocean cruise

Think boutique hotel at sea: ocean cruises mean spacious suites with private terraces, quietly elegant lounges, and service that remembers your name and preferences. Days unfold at an unhurried pace: breakfast on the balcony, a perfectly timed arrival, a private guide ashore, and dinner that feels like a destination of its own. Smaller guest counts create a serene atmosphere, while thoughtful design and culinary programs make the ship as compelling as the ports.

Select larger ships pair stylish accommodations with marquee entertainment and a lively social scene, all with the option to retreat to suite-only enclaves for elevated privacy and perks. Expect plenty of culinary choice, refined spa experiences, and itineraries spanning iconic coastlines and far-flung islands. It’s a polished way to cruise when you want energy and variety with the ability to dial up serenity whenever you wish.

Essence: Boutique-hotel ambience at sea: spacious suites, thoughtful design, elevated dining, and a calm, cultivated pace.

Best for: Milestone trips, honeymooners, empty nesters, and travelers who prefer serenity over spectacle.

Hallmarks: Fewer guests, intuitive service, generous inclusions, and well-paced itineraries to the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the South Pacific.

Consider: Quieter nightlife; book sought-after private guides and specialty dining early.

River Cruises

Sail the Danube surrounded by beautiful scenery on a luxury river cruise

Intimate vessels glide through the heart of storied cities and countryside – castles, vineyards, markets – delivering you directly to the culture you came for. Days are rich with guided walks, tastings, and museum time; evenings bring regionally inspired cuisine and conversation as landscapes drift by your window. With fewer guests and a strong sense of place, river cruises feel personal, unhurried, and deeply connected to the destination.

Essence: Intimate ships that dock in the heart of storied cities; culture-forward days and candlelit evenings as landscapes drift by.

Best for: Culture seekers, history lovers, couples, and solo travelers who prefer depth over speed.

Hallmarks: Included guided tours, regionally inspired cuisine, and perfect options for those who worry about seasickness. Iconic rivers include the Rhine & Danube, Douro, Nile, Mekong, and Chobe.

Consider: Entertainment is intentionally low-key; cabins trend cozy but refined.

Get inspired by river cruise experiences and recommendations.

Expedition Cruises

Antarctica Neko Harbour

Purpose-built ships carry you to the world’s wild edges like Antarctica, the Arctic, or the Galápagos, where naturalists lead the way and comfort quietly follows. Zodiac landings, expert briefings, and wildlife encounters are balanced by refined cabins, warm lounges, and restorative wellness spaces. It’s discovery without compromise: immersive, educational, and meticulously supported from first briefing to final toast.

Essence: Small, purpose-built ships to the world’s wild edges – Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galápagos, Patagonia – where naturalists lead and comfort quietly follows.

Best for: Adventurers, photographers, wildlife lovers, and curious minds who want discovery without sacrificing service.

Hallmarks: Expert briefings, Zodiac landings, refined lounges, and thoughtfully designed accommodations.

Consider: Limited nightlife. Keep in mind your fitness level and accessibility requirements when choosing an expedition cruise. Certain cruise lines will also provide specialty gear and equipment, though resources can vary between ships and itineraries.

How to Choose, At a Glance

You crave serenity, space, and service: Choose Luxury Ocean.

You want walk-off access to culture and cuisine: Choose River Cruises.

You want wildlife, science-forward exploration, and remote landscapes: Choose Expedition Cruises.

Why work with an advisor?

A dedicated travel advisor can turn a cruise vacation into a seamless, tailored experience.

How does it work? I match your style to the right itinerary and sail date, then secure the suite and cabin placement that actually matters (think quiet decks, midship stability, private enclaves). I handle the details around the sailing from elegant pre- and post-cruise hotel stays, private transfers, to air that syncs with embarkation windows, so every handoff feels effortless. Ashore, I curate bespoke excursions and trusted guides (not just the standard bus tour), reserve specialty dining and spa time, and manage waitlists and hard-to-get experiences. Behind the scenes, I can guide you as you prepare to set sail, and I’m your single point of contact if plans shift – think rerouting, rebooking, and smoothing disruptions with calm precision. The result: clear plans, smart buffers, and white-glove support from first inquiry to final toast, so you can simply be on vacation.
